The National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (NIMBB) – UP Diliman houses facilities and equipment and the manpower to pursue a diverse range of biotechnology projects.

A major boon to the Institute’s biotechnology efforts are its facilities and capability to analyze, identify and purify genes, proteins and microbes using a combination of methods involving the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), Southern, Northern, and dot-blot hybridization, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), photomicrography, HPLC, Western immunoblotting, ELISA, flow cytometry, and high content screening.

The Institute is also capable of automated DNA sequencing, DNA amplification including gradient PCR, cryopreservation of nucleic acids, proteins and plant extracts, and electrophoresis of nucleic acids and proteins by horizontal, vertical and capillary electrophoresis methods. In addition, the Institute can design and prepare gene constructs that may be expressed in appropriate host systems (i.e., mammalian, insect, yeast, and bacteria). These systems can be utilized to generate recombinant antibodies and produce DNA vaccines.

The Institute’s research capability also extends to the use of laboratory animals as sources of cells for tissue culture and as animal models of human diseases. The institute’s immunology research and DNA vaccine production go hand in hand with its capability to determine the immunogenicity in mice of antigens or candidate vaccines. It can also assay for in vivo reporter gene expression in mice and fish and antibody responses in mice and humans. Likewise, it has facilities for transferring genes into plant, animal and bacterial cells by physical, chemical or electrical methods through its biolistics, cell culture and electroporation facilities. The Institute’s water purification facility produces Nanopure water.

The Institute operates 11 research laboratories
