Since its establishment in 1997, the laboratory has been providing research training for undergraduate and graduate NIMBB students. These activities have resulted in several publications and paper presentations in local and international scientific journals and conferences, all co-authored by students.
The Molecular Microbiology Laboratory (MML) is the center of activities for molecular microbiology and microbial biotechnology research at the NIMBB UP Diliman.

The detection of enzyme genes from thermophilic bacteria isolated from a variety of sources. The isolation of bunker oil-utilizing bacteria from oil sludge and the subsequent cloning and expression of genes implicated in oil utilization.

The Molecular Microbiology Laboratory continues to conduct molecular microbial-based research activities and to mentor students to complete theses and dissertations on the elucidation of virulence factors in bacterial pathogens, the detection and isolation of genes for enzymes implicated in bioremediation and other industrial applications, and the analysis of gene sequences crucial to the classification and identification of bacteria.
